Feile Champions!!!

Post date: Jun 28, 2018 10:38:13 AM

Hugh congratulations and well done to our U14 team on winning their division in Feile beating St Eunans of Donegal in the final by 3-6 to 0-1 to become the first team from Four Roads to win their division at Feile.

The weekend started on Friday evening in Knockcroghery when we took on Twomilehouse (Kildare) in our opening game. We got the campaign off to a good start, winning that game by 0-9 to 0-0. However the lads put in a lack lustre performance in the second match against St Dominics and ended up loosing the game by 1-5 to 0-6. This may well have been the wake up call the lads needed as they didnt take any team for granted for here on in.

On the Saturday morning we played the club we were hosting - St Fechins from Termonkeckon, Co Louth at our home pitch in Four Roads. Everybody involved enjoyed this game with the lads playing against their new friends and the sports park in great shape, looking well in the glorious sunshine. We won this game on a scoreline of 4-13 to 0-1. Following a quick lunch we made the trip to the Connaught Centre of Excellence in Bekan, Ballyhaunis for the cup quarter final against Oranmore. We dominated the first half of this game and went in 1-3 to 0-0 up at half time, however we wasted some good chances up front and left the door open for a Oranmore comeback. The comeback came in the second half with Oranmore scoring three unanswered points as our lads tired under the heat of the day. With only a few minutes left on the clock Oranmore were awarded a penalty, giving them the opportunity to level the match. Thankfully Johnny saved the penalty and our lines were cleared, a hard fought for point from James Dillon secured the win on a scoreline to 1-4 to 0-3.

With the hurling finished for the day it was back to Four Roads for the barbeque and disco in the hall. A great evening was had by all with the lads mingling with the lads from St Fechins and also our own camogie girls and the team they were hosting, Portlaw from Waterford.

On the Sunday morning we made the trip back down to Bekan for the semi final against St Malachys, Castledawson (Derry). The wide open space on the astroturf pitch seemed to suit the lads and they moved the ball well at times. A half time lead of 1-3 to 1-0 meant the game was still alive going into the second half, however with our backs dominating and dealing well with any St Malachys attacks we were comfortble enough in the second half, finishing up with a 1-8 to 1-0 win.

The scheduled 2 hour wait for the final soon became 3 as delays in earlier games threw the schedule out of kilter. We soon learned our opponents in the final were to be St Eunans from Donegal. When the game eventually did get going, Tommy and Liam Og got the scoring underway with a point each, however it was Jimmys 2 goals either side of half time that secured this match, with St Eunans fading out of the game after the sceond goal. Further points from Liam Og, Sol and Conor Kelly and a goal from Gavin completed the scoring with us finishing with a 3-6 to 0-1 win to secure the Feile cup. The lads gave a great display of hurling and were worthy winners. Congratulations to all of them and to their families on their hurling over the course of the weekend and on their behaviour on and off the field. They are an exceptional group of young lads and I hope they go on from here to bring further glory to the parish over the coming years.

Many thanks to all who made the Feile weekend a very successfully and enjoyable weekend, to the parents who hosted kids, to those who hosted mentors and parents, served tea/sandwiches, ran the barbeque, ran the disco, pitch coordinator and stewards, supported our fundraisers, sponsored gear and those who had the pitch in immaculate condition. A hugh effort was put in by a lot of people to make it the successful and enjoyable weekend that it was.
